IMPORTANT AND RARE CONDITION CENSUS CAC APPROVED PCGS MS62 1855-C QUARTER EAGLE

In terms of overall rarity, the 1855-C is among the top issues in the Charlotte quarter eagle series. It is somewhat more available in Uncirculated grades than once believed as there are as many as seven or eight known. The finest I am aware of are as follows:

• NGC MS65: Kansas Collection via DWN, ex Heritage 4/2018: 4315 ($81,000), Heritage 2012 FUN: 4762 ($97,750), Stack’s Bowers 10/1999: 476 ($41,400; as PCGS MS64), Harry Bass Collection.

• PCGS/CAC MS64+, ex Virginia dealer (as NGC MS64).

• PCGS MS63: Goldberg 6/2014: 1694 ($39,950).

• PCGS/CAC MS62: The coin offered here, ex San Antonio Collection via Douglas Winter Numismatics

• PCGS MS62: Heritage 11/2018: 3204 ($24,000; as PCGS MS62+).

The example I am offering is in an older PCGS holder and it appears to have been graded at least 20 years ago. I grade it a solid MS62+ by today’s standards, with strong claims to an MS63 grade. It is totally unmolested with rich mint frost under appealing light orange-gold color. The strike is about average for the date with some weakness seen on the radial lines in many of the stars and some flat details at the central reverse. There are a few microscopic ticks in the left obverse field as well as an ultra-fine mint-made dark streak hidden on the reverse.

The last comparable 1855-C $2.50 to sell at auction was the PCGS MS62+ cited above.

An extremely important coin for the advanced Charlotte quarter eagle collector.

CAC has approved two in this grade with just one finer (MS64+).

CAC has approved two in MS62 and none finer.

DWN collects sales tax when appropriate.
