THE SINGLE FINEST 1849-C QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Unless you really know this series, the rarity of the 1849-C quarter eagle will come as a surprise. It is, in fact, among the rarest dates in the Charlotte quarter eagle series in higher grades, with just two or three unassailable Uncirculated coins known. The finest of these is an NGC MS65 which first sold for $39,100 as a PCGS MS62 in the 10/1999 Bass II auction, and was later graded MS64 by PCGS. I am also aware of a PCGS MS62 which I feel is overgraded.

This fresh-to-the-market example is well within the Condition Census for the issue and it is the best AU58 1849-C I have ever seen or heard of. It displays lovely deep greenish color with splashes of russet and reddish-gold on the obverse. The strike is sharp, with the slightest amount of weakness at the centers while the surfaces are nearly flawless save for a tiny horizontal mark in the lower left obverse field near star two.

Back in June 2018, Heritage sold a PCGS/CAC AU58 for $10,800. That coin was nowhere as nice as the example offered for sale here.

If you are searching for the finest available 1849-C quarter eagle, this is a unique opportunity to fill a gaping hole.

CAC has approved two in AU58 and this single coin in 58+ with none finer.
