SIGNIFICANT PCGS/CAC EF40 1845-O $2.50
Housed in an old green label holder and significantly undergraded, in my opinion. By today’s standards I grade this a solid AU50, if not even a touch finer.
With an original mintage of just 4,000 and with fewer than 100 known, the 1845-O is by far the rarest quarter eagle produced at the New Orleans mint. It is not easy to locate above AU53, and it is exceedingly rare in Uncirculated with just three or four known.
This piece shows a considerable amount of mint luster below nice medium orange-gold color. The surfaces are very slightly abraded and there are mint made defects on the obverse (from the final star up to Liberty’s back curls) and on the reverse (from the back of the eagle’s neck up to the F in OF). Both of these are seen on a sizable portion of the known 1845-O quarter eagles.
In January 2022, an NGC EF45 with CAC approval sold for $9,000 and, in my opinion, it was far less choice than the example offered here.
Here is a coin which seemingly has everything going for it: old holder, choice quality and CAC approval.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 16 finer.
