SCARCE PCGS MS61 1843-O LARGE DATE $2.50

This variety is among the scarcest New Orleans quarter eagles in Uncirculated. Around a dozen are known in Uncirculated, with all but a very small number in the MS61 to MS62 range.

This piece is fresh to the market and it is very frosty with natural light green-gold color. The strike is sharp save for the right (facing) leg of the eagle which is flat as usual. While this coin is 100% free of wear, it has some light lines (not from cleaning) on the surfaces as do most MS61 gold coins from this era. The small cud on the reverse rim over the second S in STATES is mint-made.

There has not been a single auction sale of this issue in PCGS MS61 since June 2015, while the PCGS/CAC MS62 Heritage 11/2023: 3123 coin sold to DWN for $16,800.

The price level on this variety has been depressed by some wretched NGC MS61 coins having sold cheaply in the last few years. You can forget about these low APRs when it comes to nice PCGS 1843-O Large Date quarter eagles with the appearance which this coin shows.

DWN collects sales tax when appropriate.
