‘FORMERLY FINEST KNOWN’ 1856-S $20 GRADED MS63 BY PCGS
Prior to the discovery of around 1,000 high grade pieces in the SS Central America salvage, the 1856-S was a very rare date in any MS grade and a rarity in MS63 and finer.
This coin came from the recent James Stack sale, where I purchased it for stock at $20,400. What appealed to me about this coin is the fact that it was almost certainly the finest known 1856-S when it was purchased sometime prior to 1951 (the year of his death) by this well-connected collector.
The coin itself is very high-end with delightful warm orange-gold hues atop frosty, lightly abraded surfaces.
In my opinion, this coin has a coolness factor unparalleled amongst all other 1856-S double eagles!
Ex Stack’s Bowers 12/2025: 20024 where it sold for $20,400.
