Popular Pikes Peak Design.

The firm of Clark, Gruber & Co produced quarter eagles, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles in substantial quantities in 1860 and 1861 (coins were also struck in 1862 but were dated 1861). These were readily accepted by the coin-starved Territorial residents of the Denver area, and mintages for these issues were likely in the high five-figures or possibly even a bit more. In 1862, the firm was purchased by the Federal government and it became a U.S. Assay Office. In 1906, a branch mint was established in Denver.

The design of this issue was executed by an unknown eastern engraver whose depiction of the majestic Pikes Peak resembles a poop emoji more than an actual mountain. Despite its comical appearance, this design is much-loved by contemporary collectors, and the 1860 Clark Gruber Mountain $10 is regarded as an iconic issue.

It is estimated that around 125-150 examples of this issue are known. Choice AU coins are scarce, while Uncirculated pieces are quite rare.

This is a lustrous, lightly worn coin with good overall eye appeal for both the grade and for this issue. Some rich coppery color is seen at the borders and this is nicely contrasted by even green-gold centers

PCGS has graded 24 in AU55 with 25 finer. CAC has approved five in AU55 with six finer.

Just one CAC approved 1860 Clark Gruber Mountain $10 has ever sold at auction. It was a PCGS/CAC AU53, and it brought $45,600 as Stack's Bowers 2023: 5222. The coin was just OK for the grade as it displayed a number of obtrusive marks on both sides.

I am unaware of another CAC approved 1860 Mountain that is currently available at this price point.
