Only 1,566 examples of this date were made, and today there are an estimated 100+ known. The 1860-D is more available in the AU50 to AU55 range than one might expect, but with CAC approval it is quite challenging to locate.
This reddish-gold example shows a typically irregular strike with weakness on the UN in UNITED. A thin scratch runs from the N in UNITED into the field and there is a small mark beneath the T in this word.
Including this exact coin (see below), two PCGS/CAC AU50 1860-D gold dollars have sold at auction. The other was a Gold CAC example that brought $10,575 as Heritage 2016 FUN: 6337.
