POPULAR CAC APPROVED LOW MINTAGE 1876 GOLD DOLLAR IN AN OLD NGC MS64 HOLDER
A total of 3,200 business strike 1876 gold dollars were made and unlike the lower mintage issues from the 1880s, these coins were not saved or hoarded. Today, it is not easy to locate a Gem 1876 gold dollar.
This coin is housed in an old NGC “fatty” holder and in my opinion, it is a solid MS64+/shot MS65 by today’s standards. It has natural rose and rich yellow-gold color seen over frosty, unmolested surfaces. A few small marks in the left obverse field look more extensive in the images than they do in person, while some very minor scuffs rest on the cheek of Liberty.
One PCGS/CAC MS64 and one PCGS/CAC MS64+ 1876 gold dollar have sold at auction since 2018, with the former selling for $2,882 in November 2023, and the latter bringing $3,120 in July 2021.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with eight finer.
