SCARCE CIVIL WAR ISSUE PCGS/CACMS61 1864 GOLD DOLLAR
Among the Civil War gold dollars, the 1863 deservedly gets most of the love. But the 1864 is quite difficult to locate in affordable collector grades. One has to go back to 2014 to locate another PCGS MS61 example sold at auction.
This piece is solid for the grade with no friction on the high spots as well as nice medium orange-gold color.
Looking at the numbers of MS62 and MS63 gold dollars dated 1864, the “11” in MS62 is greatly inflated, and the five seen at PCGS is likely accurate.
A nice example of this very tough date.
This the sole CAC MS61 example with 13 higher coins.
