SCARCE CAC APPROVED 1858-D GOLD DOLLAR PCGS/CAC AU58

In terms of the total number of coins known, the 1858-D seems like a fairly available issue with an estimated 250-275+ known. When available, the typical example is a dipped and/or scrubbed EF45 to AU53. Nice high-end AU coins with good color and reasonably original surfaces are scarce, and as many as half of the coins graded in MS60 to MS62 are likely to flunk/or will flunk if submitted for approval.

When you first glimpse this coin, it has the appearance of a Choice MS63 More careful inspection shows some minor rub on the high spots but it is very difficult to pinpoint any real wear. The surfaces are very hard and free of marks with a n attractive even greenish-gold hue on both sides. A small clear spot on the obverse beneath the first T in STATES may possibly be on the holder and not the coin. The overall eye appeal is excellent.

No PCGS AU58 has ever sold at auction. Heritage 8/2025 sold cheaply at $6,600, and this was mostly a reflection of its low quality. Prior to the 2025 sale, none had been offered at auction in AU58 since early 2020.

At less than $10k, this attractive high-end coin represents fair value for a Type Three Dahlonega gold dollar.

CAC has approved just 11+1 1858-D gold dollars in all grades with two in AU58 and two finer (MS61 and MS62). A single coin has been graded by CACG.
