This is the first CC double eagle using the new Type Three reverse, and it is still a tough issue in the higher circulated grades despite hundreds of coins having been located in overseas vaults since the late 1980s. The 1877-CC is pricey in MS60 and finer, and for many collectors a nice AU55 to AU58 makes a lot of sense.
I’m not certain as to why PCGS graded this coin “55+” but it does have good luster and is clean save for a mark on the neck of Liberty.
No PCGS AU55+ has ever sold at auction. Three non-CAC PCGS AU55s sold in 2023 and they brought $12,000 (in October), $11,100 (also in October), and $12,060 (in May).
