OUTSTANDING PCGS MS63 1834 PLAIN 4 HALF EAGLE

HM-3 (R-3).

The 1834 Plain 4 is far and away the most available issue of this type, but any Classic Head half eagle in MS63 is scarce, and the 1834 Plain 4 is rare in MS64 and finer.

This choice yellow-gold example is housed in an old green label holder. I regard it as an accurately graded coin by today’s standards for this series. The defining feature of this coin is its highly reflective fields which are sometimes seen on this particular die variety but seldom with this degree of reflectivity.  Some hairlines in the left obverse field limit the grade but this piece shows excellent overall eye appeal.

The last three PCGS graded MS63 1834 Plain 4 half eagles to sell at auction brought $12,600 (8/2023), $13,513 (2/2023), and $13,800 (8/2021). During this same period of time, there have been another three APRs for coins which were CAC approved, and these are not for much higher than non-CAC pieces.

An outstanding type coin.

Ex Heritage 4/2013: 5742 where it brought $11,163.
