SCARCE UNDERRATED PCGS/CAC MS61

A significant number of 1894-S eagles have been repatriated from overseas banks in the last decade+, but few have been better than MS61 and even the best of these were too marked-up to qualify as a strong candidate for CAC approval.

I can’t recall having seen a better MS61 1894-S since the Donald Bently coin (which brought $9,988 back in May 2014) which was an OGH coin which never upgraded. The piece offered here has excellent luster and FAR fewer abrasions than what is typical for this issue.

No PCGS/CAC 1894-S $10 has ever sold at auction, and just one non-CAC PCGS coin (which realized $6,600 as Heritage 2/20202:3345) has sold since mid-2017. In the 2018 ANA sale, Stack’s Bowers set the record price for the issue when they sold a PCGS/CAC MS62 for $12,000.

A choice example of the single scarcest late date Liberty Head eagle from this mint.

CAC has approved three in MS61 with three finer (all in MS62).
