PCGS MS63 1835 $2.50

HM-2,R-3.

The 1835 quarter eagle is very scarce in properly graded MS63, and it is very rare in MS64 and finer. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, the PCGS MS65+ Pogue coin is the only Gem business strike currently known.

This blazing yellow-gold example has a great naked-eye appearance with minor friction seen in the obverse fields. A small shiny spot to the right of the final A in AMERICA is of unknown origin, but it is very small and very well hidden. As with every single known 1835 HM-2 quarter eagle, the centers are weak but this piece is actually much sharper than what is normal for the issue.

In the last decade, only two PCGS non-CAC 1835 quarter eagles in PCGS MS63 have sold at auction; one bringing $9,000 in 2021, and the other selling for $9,900 in 2018. In 2017, a PCGS/CAC MS63 with very funky color brought $17,625.

With just three examples graded higher than this by PCGS, the Seattle Collection’s 1835 represents the best obtainable quality for this underappreciated issue.

From the Seattle Collection and purchased from DWN at the 2017 FUN show.
