This date remains scarce in any grade above EF45 in spite of fears that there would be oodles of 1857-S Three Dollar gold pieces on the SS Central America shipwreck. Locating an example in nice AU at a four figure price point is extremely challenging.
I cant imagine a nicer example in AU50 than this one. It appears to be completely original with deep green-gold color covering both sides. There is a considerable amount of underlying luster and a few specks of dirt are seen in the lettering. As on all 1857-S threes, the date is somewhat weak but not as much so as our photos suggest. I grade this coin solid AU53 with an small shot to grade AU55.
Three APR’s have been recorded since the end of 2021 with a low of $4,800 and a high of $5,520. A PCGS/CAC AU55 sold for $6,760 as Heritage 2019 FUN: 5607 but that coin was extremely low end, in my opinion.
When you see this coin in person you’ll understand why I feel it is really PQ.
CAC has approved this one coin in AU50 with 14 finer.
