While not nearly as difficult to locate as the 1844 and 1846 Philadelphia eagles, the 1845 is still a reasonably hard issue to locate in the AU50 to AU55 range and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with the only one I’ve seen being the PCGS/CAC MS62 Vanderbilt/Miller coin that brought $52,800 as Stacks Bowers 2/2018: 10365. It resides in the Tyrant Collection.
You’d be hard-pressed to locate a more cosmetic AU50 example of this date than the rich green and yellow-gold example. This coin puts the “dirt” in Dirty Old Gold with organic crud stuffed in the date and within the reverse letters. A lock AU53 at NGC and you wouldn’t have to destroy the surfaces to get into that holder.
The Fairmont Hoard contained just two CAC approved 1845 $10’s in AU grades; an AU50 and an AU53+ (which brought an impressive $8,400 in April 2022).
Great value at less than $3,500!
CAC has approved just four in this grade with four finer.
