SCARCE AND POPULAR 1862 $2.50 IN PCGS/CAC MS62
Around 25-35 of these are known in all MS grades, but at least 75% are in the MS60 to MS62 range, and properly graded MS63 1862 quarter eagles are rare. The finest business strike example of this date I have seen was Monty Weiner’s lovely PCGS/CAC MS64+, which sold for $52,875 as Legend 12/2020: 8.
This coin is really nice for the grade with full soft satiny luster seen below natural rich yellow-gold color. To the naked eye, this coin looks like an MS64 but inspection with a 5x glass reveals a few wispy lines in the fields. A small mark on the obverse rim below the 62 in the date is not detracting.
Only one PCGS/CAC MS62 1862 quarter eagle has sold at auction, and it brought $5,520 as Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 6200. The coin I am offering here is at least a half point to a full point nicer, in my opinion.
A pleasing Civil War quarter eagle.
CAC has approved four in MS62 with six finer.
