DIFFICULT TO LOCATE 1852-D $2.50

While considerably more available than the Dahlonega quarter eagles made from 1853 through 1856, the 1852-D is a difficult date to acquire in the mid-AU range, and it is rare and expensive in MS60 and finer.

I see this coin as nice AU55 which has been properly net graded as an AU53 due to some issues on the obverse rim around 10:00. The naked eye appearance is excellent with a considerable amount of luster seen on both sides beneath rich medium green-gold with reddish contrast at the obverse border. The strike is wonderfully bold for this issue with the centers almost fully defined but with typical mint-made weakness of the denticles as a result of a faulty collar.

Since the start of 2010 there are six recorded sales of this date in a PCGS AU53 holder. these range from a low of $6,463 in 8/2015 to a high of $8,813 (8/2013), with the two most recent sales at $7,200 (8/2022) and $7,350 (11/2021).

Ex Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 5619 where I purchased it for $7,200.
