Variety 2; mintmark entirely right of the fraction bar. An extremely scarce variety.
With the first quarter eagle from the newly-opened San Francisco being the extremely rare 1854-S, and with no quarter eagles made in 1855, the 1856-S is essentially the earliest available SF date of this denomination. It has a generous mintage of 72,120 but many were melted or otherwise lost. Today, there are an estimated 20-30 known in all Mint State grades with the majority in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This sharp yellow-gold example looks more like an MS62-MS63 than it does an MS61. There are some light marks in the fields but these are shallow and they do not detract from the impressive overall appearance.
CAC has approved this one example in MS61 with a dozen finer.
