CONDITIONALLY RARE GEM 1853 QUARTER EAGLE GRADED MS65+ BY PCGS/CAC
The 1853 is an easy coin to locate in grades up through MS64. Gems are scarce while pieces which approach the Superb level are very rare. This can be verified by this date’s current PCGS population of just three in MS65+ with three finer; all MS66.
This coin has great luster with dynamic natural buttery yellow-gold color. The strike is absolutely hammered while the surfaces are very clean. There are a few raised diagonal striations in the planchet—as-made—which bisect the reverse and a small mint-made copper spot is seen below he eagle’s right (facing) wing.
There are three APRs for the 1853 $2.50 in PCGS/CAC MS65+ and all are the same coin. That example sold for 7,600 in early 2021 and it twice brought $8,519; once in 2021 and initially in 2013. In 2015, a PCGS MS66 with a detracting black streak through the top of the 3 in the date brought $9,988.
If you are putting together a high-end 12 piece gold type set and are looking for a spiffy Liberty quarter eagle for inclusion, say hello to my little friend…
CAC has approved three in MS65 (including this one in 65+) with just one coin finer; an MS66.
