POPULAR MS61 1844-D $2.50 GRADED MS61 BY NGC

As I have written repeatedly, “there is no such thing as a common date Dahlonega quarter eagle once you get up into the Mint State grades.” This unusually nice for the grade coin clearly lives up the this adage and despite the grossly inflated MS61 populations at both service, any 1844-D with this much sizzle is a very difficult piece of gold. Of the dozen+ known in MS grades, most are in the MS60 to MS62 range and I have never seen one finer than MS63.

The yellow-gold surfaces have not been scrubbed or irradiated with nasty chemicals leaving a nice medium yellow-gold patina over lightly marked surfaces. It is notable how well defined the centers are on this coin and the 1844-D is quite rare with this degree of detail.

Why isn’t this coin in a PCGS holder?

I’m:

a) too old

b) too busy and

c) too tired of the endless waste of time and resources to play the crossover game.

At least I was for this coin.

There are just five APRs for PCGS MS61s of this date since 2000, with the two most recent (8/2023 and 11/2022) each selling for $9,600; this is the exact same price as what the sole NGC MS61 to sell since 2010 bought in 4/2025.

DWN collects sales tax when appropriate.
