There are exactly four examples known of this date—by far the rarest of the 14 quarter eagles from New Orleans—known in MS60 and finer, and DWN has handled every single one of these. In fact, we paid a record-setting $121,000 for the single finest known—a PCGS/CAC MS63 ex Virgil Brand—back in March, 2021.
In my estimation around five or six nice CAC quality AU58 1845-O quarter eagles exist, as demonstrated by the current CAC population of six in AU58 with just one finer. I have sold at least four different PCGS/CAC AU58 coins, the last of which I priced at $32,500, and sold within an hour of posting it on my website.
This is a very strong coin for the grade with excellent luster over clean, vibrant surfaces. Wear is limited to the obverse high spots, while the overall quality of strike is excellent. Most importantly, this coin appears to be wholly natural with no significant evidence of having ever been messed-with.
This coin was the #1 1845-O quarter eagle in the famous New England Collection until I replaced it back in 2012 with a PCGS MS61.
If you’ve ever contemplated beginning a set of New Orleans quarter eagles—a fun and completable endeavor that I highly recommend—why not begin with a Condition Census example of the single toughest of the 14 issues.
No PCGS/CAC AU58 has ever sold at auction, and no 1845-O quarter eagle graded AU58 by PCGS has sold at a public auction since 9/2016(!).
From the New England Collection, and earlier purchased from DWN via private treaty in 2012.
CAC has approved six in AU58 with just a single coin finer (PCGS MS63).
