“CAH” 1864-S $20 IN PCGS AU58

*Crusty as Hell.

Back in the day, the 1864-S $20 was considered to be a scarce—if not even rare—date in the higher circulated grades and a rarity in Uncirculated. The rarity profile of this date was altered forever with the discovery of the S.S. Brother Jonathan from which over 100 nice 1864-S double eagles entered the market.

This ultra-crusty example is almost certainly from an overseas bank as it shows conspicuous amounts of vault dirt on both sides. There is no real wear but enough bag friction is present to grade this a solid AU58.
