CHOICE PCGS AU53 1858-O $10, ex Fairmont
The 1858-O is one of the more available New Orleans eagles struck during the 1850s, but it is considerably scarcer overall than the 1851-O. It becomes difficult to locate in the higher AU range while it remains a five-figure item in any Uncirculated grade.
This piece is 100% original with rich natural russet color seen on both sides. I’m not sure why it didn’t sticker at CAC, as it appears to be quite a bit nicer than virtually every No Motto eagle in this grade, and virtually any other 1853-O to have sold at auction over the past decade.
Just a single PCGS AU53 1858-O $10 has sold at auction since Fall 2016 and it brought $4,348 as Legend 7/2023: 167. No less than five PCGS/CAC AU55 examples of the 1858-O $10 have been sold by Stack’s Bowers between 3/2023 and 11/2024, with prices ranging from a low of $6,300 to a high of $9,000.
