VERY SCARCE COLLECTOR GRADE 1856-D $1.00

The 1856-D is the third rarest date in the Type Three issues from this mint. Only 1,460 were made, and I believe that well under 100 exist.

This is among the lowest grade 1856-D gold dollars known, and it is certainly the most affordable example available to collectors which has not been details-graded due to damage or excessive cleaning. This piece has been conservatively net graded by PCGS as it has Choice EF details (as well as some remnants of Mint luster), but it also shows some light hairlines that are likely the result of the coin having been wiped with a cloth long ago. There is a spot covering the E in AMERICA which seems to be removable.

A harshly cleaned PCGS VF35 in an old holder brought $7,500 and $7,150 in its two auction appearances in 2021, while a PCGS/CAC EF40 with two nasty scratches on Liberty’s face sold cheaply in 2022 for $8,400.

There are just a handful of straight graded 1856-D gold dollars available at less than $10k, and this is among the nicest one of these.
