CONDITIONALLY RARE 1860-D GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC AU58

Around 100 to 125 1860-D gold dollars are believed to exist from the original mintage of just 1,566 coins. Around half are AU but these tend to be low-end and many have been cleaned or processed. Choice original AU55 and AU58 examples are rare and this date is very rare in Uncirculated with seven or eight known. Of the six different Type III gold dollars from Dahlonega, the 1860-D is the third scarcest, trailing only the 1861-D and the 1856-zd

This is an outstanding example for both the date and the grade. A good amount of mint luster can be seen on both sides and the russet toning is somewhat more extensive on the reverse as it is on the obverse. A few light, scattered marks can be seen but none are serious. As on every known example, the U in UNITED is very faint and, yes, this is the exact same obverse die that was used to produce the legendary 1861-D gold dollars.

Stacks Bowers sold a different PCGS/CAC AU58 for $24,000 as Lot 5322 in their 11/2024 auction. Heritage sold a non-CAC PCGS AU58 for $21,600 as Lot 4268 in their 2025 ANA auction.

Even if you have virtually unlimited funds, you are still not likely to be able to add a higher graded 1860-D gold dollar to your set.

CAC has approved six in AU58 with just one coin finer (PCGS MS62).
