SCARCE PCGS MS63 1902 $20

Among the various 20th century Liberty Head double eagles, only the 1905 is scarcer than the 1902, and due to hoards, the margin of difference between these two issues in MS63 has shrunk dramatically in the last decade. The 1905 continues to be located in overseas shipments of US gold; the 1902 as well, but not quite as frequently.

This is a 100% natural example with great luster and sharp definition. Just a few too many scuffs on Liberty’s cheek and the central left obverse field keep this out of the CAC approved realm and a significantly higher price tag.

A hoard of these in PCGS MS63 hit the market and torpedoed values down to $6,000-7,000+ from the previous range of $10,000-12,000+ but it has recovered nicely as evidenced by the last three APRs of $16,800 (8/2023), $13,200 (4/2022), and $10,800 (1/2022).

It should be noted that in the PCGS Trueview image of this coin (click here), a large copper spot appears at the back of the neck on the obverse. I think this is due to a fault with the photo but the buyer needs to determine if has been removed (I don’t think this is the case).
