REMARKABLE PCGS/CAC EF40 1916 SLQ

The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is an important coin from a numismatic perspective, as it is the first issue of this design (with the lowest mintage figure by a huge margin), and it is the second scarcest issue in the series after the rare 1918/7-S.

In my opinion, this coin is undergraded, and I believe it is a strong EF45. I’m basing this on the fact that there is far more detail on the feathers than normal for any EF 1916 quarter, and the folds of the drapery are much stronger than on your typical EF40 1916 Standing Liberty quarter. This is among the very few examples of this date that has not been cleaned or lightened and both sides show deep grey color framed by even deeper hues at the peripheries. I think this coin is extremely attractive although its extreme originality might not be everyone’s cup o’ tea.

No PCGS/CAC EF40 1916 SLQ has ever sold at auction. Two non-CAC PCGS 40s have crossed the block in the last three years, with one selling for $10,200 in May 2024, and the other realizing $12,00 in September 2023. Just a single PCGS EF45 has ever sold at auction, and it was not as nice as the coin offered here. It sold for $9,600 as SB 4/2022: 2068.

If you have around $10k budgeted for a nice 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a nicer example than this one.

CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 89 finer.
