CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC 1854-O LARGE DATE $10.00
This interesting variety uses a silver dollar date punch which is comically placed close to the truncation. It is more available than the 1854-O Small Date $10, but it is scarce in properly graded AU58 and very rare in any Uncirculated grade.
This is an absolutely outstanding example with no real wear; just some light rub on the obverse high spots from being transported in a bag. It is 100% original with fully natural medium orange-gold hues on both sides. Other than a few minor ticks on Liberty’s cheek and a shallow old horizontal mark on the reverse under TA in STATES, the surfaces are uncommonly free of the heavy marks seen on most examples of this variety.
Since April 2022 when a PCGS/CAC AU58 brought an aggressive $16,800 there have been four other APRs ranging from a low of $7,800 in 8/2024 to a high of $10,200 in 3/2023. The most recent sale occurred in 1/2025 and it was for $9,000.
Unless you want to spend $25,000+ on a PCGS MS60, this choice example will fit nicely into a high-end set of New Orleans eagles.
CAC has approved 12 in AU58 with just two finer (both in MS61).
