VERY CHOICE PCGS MS62 1853-C GOLD DOLLAR

The 1853-C is scarcer than the 1851-C and the 1852-C gold dollars, but it is more available than the 1849-C and 1850-C. In my experience, the1853-C is scarce in MS60 to MS62, rare in MS63, and very rare choicer than this. I believe that the coin I am offering here is among the 10 or so finest known for the issue.

I bought this from a very savvy dealer who specializes in upgrading coins. It came from the Stack’s Bowers 11/2024 sale (see below) where it was graded MS62. He tried it numerous times to upgrade to an MS63 and it didn’t work. His loss, your gain…

The very frosty surfaces are overlaid with lovely 100% natural reddish-gold and deep orange-gold hues which really give this coin a tremendous amount of eye appeal. A few small ticks in the obverse fields are likely the reason why this coin isn’t in an MS63 holder, but I feel it is very PQ and it should have graded MS62+.

This exact coin is the lone PCGS MS62 1853-C gold dollar to sell at auction since 2019. A slightly nicer PCGS/CAC MSS63 brought $19,800 in May 2023.

This would be an ideal type coin for the collector who is seeking a single high grade (and somewhat scarcer) from Charlotte.

Ex Stack’s Bowers 11/2023: 6393, where it sold for $11,400.
