THE SINGLE FINEST FAIRMONT 1863 $20 GRADED PCGS MS61

There were just two PCGS MS61 examples of this date in the Fairmont Hoard: this exact coin (see below for more information), and a much less nice example that brought $36,000 as SB 4/2022: 5397. None were found in any grade higher, and the only finer pieces known are a small group from Kentucky discovered by a lucky farmer, as well as a few from the S.S. Republic.

The 1863 remains the second scarcest Civil War $20 from Philadelphia, and it is the third scarcest in high grades from this facility, trailing the 1859 and the 1862.

This coin is blatantly original with great color strong luster and a minimal number of marks for the grade. Some friction in the left obverse field—as found on virtually any Type One double eagle in MS61—is likely the main reason why this otherwise-deserving coin didn’t get approved at CAC.

Before the two PCGS MS61 examples of this date sold at auction in 2022, it had been a full 10 years since the previous piece was made available via this route.

An important coin offered at a favorable price.

From the Palos Verdes Collection and ex Stacks Bowers 11/2022: 7327 where it sold for $40,800.
