RARE GEM 1855 QUARTER EAGLE

Few people—save for true Quarter eagle connoisseurs—are aware of just how rare this date is in Gem. I checked my records and I’ve never owned an 1855 finer than MS64, and only a few at that level. I believe that around four or so Gems exist, with the single best a PCGS MS66 that sold for $18,400 as Heritage 6/2005, and which has not been seen since.

This piece has a terrific naked-eye appearance with thick, undisturbed mint luster below even medium orange-gold toning. Inspection with a 5x glass reveals a few light scuffs in the obverse fields, but I regard this coin as a no-questions-asked Gem which isn’t likely to be equaled or exceeded by any offerings in the near future.

Since 2005, there have been two relevant APRs for Gem 1855 quarter eagles. Heritage 11/2020: 3376 was graded MS65+ by PCGS/CAC, and it realized $19,200. Heritage 1/2018: 6021 was the same coin sold two years later, but as an MS65 PCGS/CAC; it set a record price for the issue at $20,400.

I haven’t tried to cross this coin, but if you have good luck, you just made $5,000-7,500.
