SCARCE 1874-S $5 GRADED AU53 BY PCGS
Unlike most of the S-mint half eagles of this era, the population of this date didn’t increase too dramatically as a result of Fairmontization. The 1874-S remains scarce in AU53/55, and it is exceedingly rare in AU58. An Uncirculated 1874-S may exist but I am not aware of it.
This Condition Census example is 100% natural with rich green-gold color over slightly marky surfaces. As on all 1874-S half eagles, the mintmark is tiny and not sharply impressed, but this is clearly not a Weak mintmark coin.
The only APR for a CAC approved PCGS AU53 was $2,640 in 3/2021, but this was for a coin designated as “Weak S’ by PCGS. Stack’s Bowers sold a nice PCGS/CAC AU55 from the Fairmont hoard for $7,800 in their 2022 ANA auction.
This date continues to fly under the radar and it is undervalued in my opinion.
CAC has approved three in this grade with five finer.
