SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU50 1858-S
By virtue of its higher mintage of 18,600, the 1858-S is not as scarce as the 1859-S and 1860-S half eagles; both of which have lower mintages. I believe that there are around 15 examples currently known in AU grades; a number that is inflated due to a number of nice 1858-s half eagles being present in the Fairmont hoard.
The obverse isn’t as lustrous as one might hope for, but it shows light russet hues over a slightly ticky surface; the reverse is nicer with a good deal of luster and it appears to be a full “55” in my opinion.
There is only one relevant APR for this date in CAC approved PCGS AU50, and it occurred in late 2022 when a nice example (ex Fairmont) sold for $7,200.
CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
