RARE PCGS/CAC MS61 1854 SMALL DATE

Small Date with 154 in the date sharply repunched.

1854 double eagles are found with a Small Date and a Large Date variety. The former is far more available and it is fairly easy to locate in circulated grades. It becomes rare in Uncirculated with most of the nicer pieces in the MS60 to MS61 range. This date is very rare in MS62 to MS63 and exceedingly rare finer than this.

This may be the nicest MS61 example of an 1854 Small Date which I can recall seeing. It is absolutely "new" with no wear or high point friction and full luster. Both sides show only a few shallow scuffs and are overlaid with rich natural orange-gold color which becomes "hotter" towards the edges.

The last PCGS MS61 example of this date with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $12,925 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 12008.

This variety is nearly impossible to find nicer than this and this coin represents exceptional quality for the grade.

CAC has approved five in this grade with just one finer (MS65)
