SCARCE 1860-S $5 GRADED EF45 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC
The 1860-S is similar in overall rarity to the 1859-S and the 1861-S, although it is slightly more available than both of these issues in high grade (in this case, AU55 and finer). I believe that there are 60-70+ known, with around 10 or so in the various AU grades. The finest known is the PCGS Bass III example that sold for $27,600 in October 1999. I believe that this is the only Uncirculated 1860-S which is currently known.
This is one of the few 1860-S in any grade which has not been stripped or over-zealously conserved. The surfaces show a pleasing russet and green-gold coloration, with more luster than what is typical for this date/grade. There is dirt caked into the date and the lettering on the reverse and this further attests to this attractive coin’s signs of originality.
No CAC approved PCGS EF45 1860-S half eagle has ever sold at auction, and the only three APRs for this date are very low grade coins; all graded between F15 and VF30.
CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 10 finer.
