COLLECTOR QUALITY PCGS EF45 1885-CC $20

There are four scarce, low-mintage CC double eagles from the Type Three design of 1876-1893. These are the 1878-CC, 1879-CC, 1885-CC, and 1891-CC. All of these are very hard to locate in the popular collector range of VF30 to EF45.

This is a nice example which is totally fresh to the market. It is a real EF45 and not a scrubbed-up VF which shoved its way into an EF45 holder. A good deal of luster is present and both sides show natural light golden color. There are no major marks or hairlines visible and the eye appeal is excellent.

Since the middle of 2022, three PCGS EF45 1885-CC $20s have been auctioned. The most recent sale was Heritage 5/2023: 92066 at $26,400 for a nice OGH CAC coin. In May 2023, Heritage sold a non-CAC coin which was similar in quality to my coin for $22,200. And in August 2022, Heritage sold a solid-for-the-grade non-CAC piece for $26,400.

This is a coin which is missing from many date sets of CC $20s.
