SCARCE AND UNDERAPPRECIATED 1841 $10 GRADED AU55 BY PCGS
As with the similarly-dated half eagle, the 1841 eagle is a scarce and underappreciated issue. There are likely not more than 12-15 properly graded AU55 to AU58’s known and Uncirculated examples are very rare with just four known to me. The finest 1841-P $10, by a long shot, is the Heritage 2/2018: 4224 coin graded MS63 by PCGS and ex Admiral/Warren Miller. It sold for $48,000 in early 2018.
This coin has excellent luster but it is scuffy as are virtually all known examples of this date. I should point out that the images accompanying this coin make it seem alot scuffier than it is in hand. The reverse is less abraded and I grade it 58 on it own merits.
Three PCGS AU55 1841 eagles have sold since the start of 2022. Two were CAC approved and one brought $3,840 (HA 1/2024: 4933; cheap!!) while the other realized $8,100 (SB 4/2022: 5216; NOT cheap!!).
