COLLECTOR QUALITY PCGS EF40 1879-CC $20
There are four scarce, low mintage CC double eagles from the Type Three design of 1876-1893. These are the 1878-CC, 1879-CC, 1885-CC, and 1891-CC. All of these are very hard to locate in the popular collector range of VF30 to EF45.
It’s been at least a few years since I’ve offered a nice “affordable” collector grade 1879-CC $20 for sale. This one has nice natural russet color with some “vault dirt” on the high spots on the obverse. There a few old scratches in the lower right obverse field which are easy to miss and with the exception of these, this coin is much closer to being a 45 than it is a 40.
Since the start of 2021, there has been just a single PCGS EF40 1879-CC $20 sold at auction and it brought $16,200 in July 2022; that coin wasn’t nearly as nice as this. In their 2022 ANA auction, Heritage sold a nice PCGS/CAC EF45 for $22,200.
