VERY SCARCE NGC/CAC AU55 1848-O EAGLE

Variety 1, with a ring on the shield.

The 1848-O eagle is a reasonably available issue in the New Orleans No Motto eagle series but it is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and quite rare (and expensive) in Uncirculated. There are probably not more than eight to ten known in AU with natural color and choice surfaces.

This is an absolutely delightful example with deep russet hues accentuated by splashes of orange-gold. The strike is better than average for the date and the surfaces are clean as a whistle, lacking the usually-seen abrasions. The eye appeal of this coin rivals any 1848-O eagle I have seen in an AU55 holder.

No CAC approved AU55 1848-O eagle from either service has ever sold at auction.Since March 2012, only one AU55 has sold and this was an NGC example which brought $5,875 as Heritage 3/16: 5081. This example is nicer, in my opinion, than the PCGS/CAC AU55 I recently offered for $7,500 in my Blue Hill offering (March 2019).

An impressive and underappreciated coin.

CAC has approved five in this grade with seven finer.
