The 1845-O is comparable in overall rarity to the 1846-O and 1851-O but it is a touch more available in higher grades. In Uncirculated, the 1845-O is a very rare coin with just six or seven known, the finest of which are a pair of MS63′s (one ex Bass and one ex S.S. New York). To the best of my knowledge, the present example is the only Uncirculated 1845-O currently available for sale to collectors.

This attractive, frosty example show rich yellow-gold with both sides show similar even hues. The strike is excellent for the issue with sharp centers and borders while the surfaces show just a few small, scattered ticks as consistent with the grade. There are some diagnostic die scratches on the reverse above MERIC in AMERICA and the 18 in the date is sharply repunched.

The last PCGS MS61 example of this date to sell at auction is this exact coin (see below for the pedigree) while a CAC approved NGC MS61 sold for $10,350 as Heritage 6/11: 4631.

No Motto New Orleans half eagles are very popular with collectors and with the exception of the 1844-O, all issues in this series are very hard to locate in Uncirculated, especially in PCGS holders.

Ex Heritage 3/10: 2279 where it sold for $12,650.
