Only 82 Proofs were struck of which well under half are known. The present example is almost certainly one of the two or three finest known Proof 1883 quarter eagles.

As with many of the quarter eagles from this decade, mintage figures for business strikes was very small and only 1,920 1883 quarter eagles were made for circulation. This superb Gem Proof is one of the nicest Proof quarter eagles from this era which I have owned. It shows a stark black and white appearance with extremely deep frost on the devices contrasted by glowing, reflective fields. There are no hairlines or mint-made signifiers seen on the surfaces and I can see little difference between this coin and other Proofs of this denomination which reside in PR67 holders.

Legend Morphy 2/14: 323, also graded PR66DC by PCGS and approved by CAC, brought $41,125 but it was not as choice as the present example.

This is the second finest known to me, trailing only an NGC PR67UC which brought $43,135 back in early 2012. An impressive and important coin.

CAC has approved two in this grade/designation with only one finer.
