Type Two Reverse. Hub of 1859-1907.  The reverse of the quarter eagle was changed in 1859 and from this year through 1861, varieties from Philadelphia are known with the old and new reverse. For the 1859 Philadelphia issues, the Type Two reverse hub is harder to locate. As a date, the 1859 is scarce in any Uncirculated grade and rare in MS63. There are fewer than a dozen pieces known at this level and I am aware of just one or two in MS64 and a single Gem.

This extremely choice example is very frosty with superb natural orange-gold color atop silky surfaces. There is some minor mint-made weakness of strike from 7:00 to 9:00 on the obverse rim and a reverse mark below ES in STATES. I could easily have seen this coin in an MS64 holder as it has eye appeal galore, especially for this issue.

There is currently a PCGS MS63/CAC example of the 1859 Type 2 reverse quarter eagle for sale on E-Bay at $6,670. And the Goldberg 9/11: 1903 coin, graded MS64 by NGC and similar in quality to the present example, brought $6,325.

This is an exceptional value and an extremely nice example of a date that I regard as highly undervalued in MS62 and above.

This is the only example graded MS63+ by NGC. CAC has approved two in MS63 and two finer.
