While the 1838-C and 1839-D command far higher prices, the 1839 is actually the single scarcest Classic Head quarter eagle. It is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and the surprising number of auction appearances for this date in the last year represent the dispersal of a one-time hoardlet.

This light green-gold example shows minimal wear which is concentrated on the high spots of the obverse. The obverse is choice with nice even color, no marks of note and good detail; the reverse is a bit less choice with some light marks above and behind the eagle and a slightly less “crisp” appearance.

The last NGC AU58 1839 quarter eagle to sell at auction realized $4,700 as Heritage 3/14: 10539. A PCGS AU58 brought $6,463 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 11050.
