The 1861-S is a scarcer Civil War double eagle whose population has not been distorted by shipwreck hoards. It is scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is seldom seen with natural color and choice surfaces.

This coin has a classic “Euro” appearance with deep rose and orange-gold surfaces contrasted by darker highlights. There are no noticeable marks on the surfaces and a good deal of luster clings to the protected areas. This coin has a wonderful “look” which sophisticated collectors of Type One double eagles will greatly appreciate.

No CAC approved AU55 1861-S double eagles have sold at auction in recent years. In 2014, two non-CAC pieces graded by NGC sold for $4,641 (8/14) and $4,553 (1/14).

A nice example of this popular date and good value when one considers the current value of MS60 to MS61 1861-S double eagles.

CAC has approved five in this grade with 16 finer.
