5,000 gold dollars were made as business strikes in 1886. This date appears to be the rarest single issue from this decade in Gem Uncirculated and superb pieces are very rare. PCGS has a current population of only five in MS67 with none finer.
This frosty example has rich orange-gold color which changes to purplish-gold at intervals along the obverse borders. There are no clashmarks seen and the fields lack any signs of contact or min-made imperfections.
The only PCGS MS67 1886 gold dollar to ever sell at auction was Heritage 1/06: 1912, which sold for $8,625.Five NGC MS67’s have sold since June 2009 and they have ranged in price from a low of $4,485 to a high of $5,175.
