80 Proofs struck. I have seen estimates of as many as 40-50 known Proofs for this year but this seems high to me, especially in light of the fact that only four non-impaired examples have sold at auction since 2006. I think a number were melted because of the economic crisis 0f 1892-1893 and that the actual number known is more like two dozen.

This is clearly among the finest known Proof 1891 quarter eagles and it has wonderful natural natural russet color atop unhairlined, reflective fields. The devices are as deeply frosted as on any Proof of this year that I can recall having seen and certainly appear to have enough contrast to be designated as Ultra Cameo.  The eye appeal is exceptional for the date and the grade.

Heritage 5/12: 4869, graded PR64 by PCGS (and housed in an old green holder: I graded it PR65 Cameo), sold for $25,300.

This is a remarkable example of a date that I feel is quite undervalued in relation to the Proofs from this 1880′s.

CAC has approved four 1891 Proof quarter eagles: one PR65 with a Cameo designation, one PR65 with a Deep Cameo designation and two PR66′s with Deep Cameo designations.
