CHOICE AU 1854-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 37-BB; Large D. Not designated by NGC.

The 1854-D is the second most available Dahlonega half eagle after the 1853-D. It is generally seen in EF40 to AU53 and properly graded AU55 examples are harder to find than in the past due to this issue's popularity with type collectors.

This lightly worn lustrous example would likely have graded AU58 were it not for a mint-made planchet crack on the obverse which runs from the edge at the outside of star nine and into the top of Liberty's head.

The last NGC AU55 1854-D half eagle to sell at auction realized $3,825 as Stacks Bowers 3/15: 7381.

This would make a great D mint type coin for the collector who has around $4,000 to spend on a choice half eagle from the fabled Dahlonega mint.
