CHOICE SLIDER 1846-O QUARTER EAGLE

The 1846-O is scarcer than the 1847-O and 1852-O quarter eagles in higher grade and comparable to the 1850-O and the 1851-O. While a number have been graded in AU58 at both services, many are not choice and lack originality.

This uncommonly well struck example shows just the slightest weakness on the eagle's right leg but is otherwise very strongly detailed for the issue. It is lightly worn on the high spots and quite lustrous with attractive natural yellow-gold color. On the reverse there is some minor mint-made discoloration beneath the right wing.

The last PCGS AU58 1846-O quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $1,880 as Heritage 4/16: 5669 and that piece was stripped and low end. A nicer PCGS AU58 brought $2,115 as Heritage 6/13: 5574.
