GEM SLIDER 1871-S DOUBLE EAGLE

As with all SF mint Type Two double eagles issued between 1866 and 1872, the 1871-S becomes scarce in properly graded AU58, rare in MS60 to MS61 and extremely rare finer than this. Most examples in AU58 holders are abraded and have been recently dipped or lightened.

This gem slider shows no real wear and it has rich natural orange-gold color with some darkening on the relief details. There is the slightest amount of friction on the obverse but I have seen many inferior examples in MS60 or even MS61 holders.

The last PCGS/CAC AU58 1871-S double eagle to sell at auction brought a strong $4,994 as Stacks Bowers 7/15: 6115.

Type Two double eagles are currently out of favor and nice AU58's seem like excellent value to me.

CAC has approved 31 in this grade with 22 finer.
